Perfect Harmony: At Tuscany's Adler Thermae, Guests Will Blend Hiking and Singing
Renowned Italian maestro will lead countryside walks and Gregorian chant lessons

Bagno Vignoni, Italy, June, 2019 … This September, music lovers of all levels will be welcomed to ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE in Bagno Vignoni, Tuscany for an intimate three-day excursion called Hike & Sing, which is centered around two joyful activities: Walking through the glorious countryside and taking group singing lessons in historic churches. The lessons will be focused on Gregorian chant, a cappella style of sung prayer, usually done in Latin, that dates to the first millennium. Typically sung in unison, it has been described as melodic, meditative and mysterious.

The classes will be taught by Maestro Livio Picotti, a world-renowned pianist, singer and choral instructor. Picotti has taught at the School of Advanced Artistic and Musical Training in Rovigo, and currently directs several music groups, including Ensemble Capella Dvcale and Coro Cantus Anthimi. He describes his work as “a synthesis between musical, vocal, sensory-acoustic and spiritual research.” Guests will immerse themselves in nature as they follow in the footsteps of Saint Catherine of Siena, influential 14th-century activist and theologian. They'll also have a chance to connect with their inner selves as they sing and chant in centuries-old churches, getting a glimpse of what life must have been like in Italy's Middle Ages.

Below is a general overview of the “Hike & Sing” itinerary:

Participants arrive at Adler Thermae in the afternoon and get to know the other members of their small group.

Guests will enjoy a singing lesson in the Santa Caterina Chapel, which overlooks the historic spa bath in the town of Bagno Vignoni. They will also walk about four miles to the hilltop village of San Quirico d'Orcia, known for its beautiful churches and views of iconic Tuscan cypress trees.

The group will take a five-mile walk from the picturesque medieval hill town of Montalcino, famous for its Brunello di Montalcino wines, to a singing lesson at the Abbey of Sant'Antimo. This travertine monastery, which is still home to Benedictine monks, is built in the Romanesque style and dates to the 12th century.

On the final day of the trip, guests will return to the Abbey of Sant'Antimo for a final singing class and a mystical, magical experience: Sunday morning mass accompanied by Gregorian chanting.
